There are moments when you know something before you begin explaining it away. You feel the sharpness of a word before you speak it. You recognize when an action does not belong to the person you wish to become. You sense when pride, resentment or self-importance has entered your response. Then the mind arrives with its reasons: They deserved it. I had no choice. This is simply who I am. If you repeat those reasons often enough, you can make almost anything appear justified. Yet somewhere beneath that justification, something within you still knows. The Transmissions describe how a wall can form around conscience, built gradually from attitudes you have inherited, learned and accepted until they become part of the Personality.
Look carefully at the attitudes you carry, because many of them entered your life without your conscious permission. You learned how to react from family, society, experience and the world surrounding you. You learned what should offend you, what you should desire, whom you should distrust, what makes you important and what makes you afraid of appearing small. Eventually you stopped seeing these attitudes as things you had acquired and began calling them me. This is where identification becomes powerful. An attitude no longer feels like something passing through you; it becomes a position you must protect. And every time you defend it without observing it, you add another brick to the wall that separates you from the finer awareness within.
But you do not have to tear down the entire wall in a single heroic act. Remove the brick that appears today. When irritation rises, see it before you give it your voice. When jealousy appears, do not decorate it with reasons. When you feel the need to prove yourself right, ask what within you needs victory so badly. The teachings continually return responsibility to you because no one else can make this change in your consciousness. Another person can point toward the Way, but they cannot walk inwardly for you. You alone must see what you have become identified with, and you alone can stop feeding it. This is not punishment; it is the beginning of freedom.
As you begin removing these accumulated attitudes, you may discover that becoming more conscious does not mean adding more to yourself. It often means becoming less burdened by what you mistakenly believed you had to be. You do not need every old resentment. You do not need every judgment. You do not need to carry yesterday's reactions into every person you meet tomorrow. Each attitude you see clearly and cease to justify creates an opening through which the Light of your deeper Being can become more apparent. The Transmissions describe this work as removing the wall around conscience so that the Light can increase—not because Light was absent, but because what you had built around it prevented its expression.
So when that quiet inner recognition comes, do not dismiss it because it does not shout as loudly as the Personality. Become still enough to notice it. You may discover that the deepest guidance in your life does not command, flatter or argue with you. It simply reveals. And each time you choose to see yourself without justification, another brick loses its hold. Keep removing what hides the Light, one attitude, one reaction, one moment at a time. Eventually you may understand that you were never trying to create something sacred within yourself. You were simply uncovering the part of you that had never forgotten.
